Cedar Mountain Commons - Frequently Asked Questions

Below are some Frequently Asked Questions regarding Cedar Mountain Commons.  If you have further questions, don't hesitate to contact us.

For more pictures, visit our Virtual TourWhat is Cedar Mountain Commons?
Cedar Mountain Commons is a senior living neighborhood that is owned and operated by Hartford Hospital/Jefferson House. It is comprised of 44 independent living apartments and 34 assisted living apartments, all geared to maximizing resident function and quality of life.

Since Cedar Mountain Commons is owned and operated by Hartford Hospital/Jefferson House, must I use Hartford Hospital if/when I become sick?
No. Residents are free to choose whatever hospital/physician(s) they would like to care for/treat them. In the event of a medical emergency requiring ambulance transportation and hospitalization, however, the "closest" hospital will typically be chosen by the ambulance driver.

For more pictures, visit our Virtual TourWhat services do you provide in the independent living neighborhood?
Residents of the independent living neighborhood are provided with 2 meals daily (self-service continental breakfast as well as waiter/waitress-served dinner), weekly housekeeping (to include laundering of bed and bath linens), all utilities except for cable television and telephone, scheduled transportation (to doctors' offices, banks, shopping, etc.), varied recreational activities and programs and 24 hour staff response to resident emergencies. (more)

What services do you provide in the assisted living neighborhood?
Residents of the assisted living neighborhood are provided with 3 waiter/waitress-served meals daily, weekly housekeeping (to include laundering of bed and bath linens), all utilities except for cable television and telephone, scheduled transportation (to doctors' offices, banks, shopping, etc.), varied recreational activities and programs and 24 hour staff response to resident emergencies. In addition, eight hours of assistance (to include bathing, dressing, transport to/from meals and activities, medication management, etc.) are provided as part of the basic monthly rent. Additional services/service packages can be arranged and are charged for separately. (more)

For more pictures, visit our Virtual TourMust I sign a lease agreement? What are the terms?
All residents and/or their guarantors must sign a Residency Agreement prior to assuming occupancy. The agreement is in effect for one year and has been designed to hold the basic monthly fee (rent) from time of initial occupancy ("financial occupancy") to "the resident’s first year anniversary date".  The agreement may, however, be terminated by the resident/resident’s guarantor at any time with 30 days written notice to the Director. During the 30 day notice period the resident/resident's guarantor is responsible for all charges incurred. The Residency Agreement is self renewing on the resident’s anniversary date unless 30 days written notification is provided to the Director terminating the agreement.

How often/when can I expect an increase in my basic monthly fee?
Annually, on your anniversary date of (financial) occupancy.  In order to provide you with time to review the financial impact of your new basic monthly fee with your family/guarantor/financial advisor, etc. six week’s notice of a fee increase is provided to all residents.

Are battery-powered wheelchairs/”scooters” permitted at Cedar Mountain Commons?
Yes.

Are residents allowed to have pets?
Yes, small indoor pets may accompany a resident (on initial move-in) to their new home at Cedar Mountain Commons. A non-refundable deposit is charged. It is the resident’s responsibility to care for his/her pet.

For more pictures, visit our Virtual TourDoes Cedar Mountain Commons provide care for residents with dementia?
Cedar Mountain Commons does not have a special/secured unit for dementia care.  For prospects in need of this specialty service we refer to neighboring assisted living communities that do make this provision/these accommodations available.

Are residents of Cedar Mountain Commons guaranteed direct, long-term care admission to Jefferson House?
No.  While residents of Cedar Mountain Commons are provided with "priority access" to Jefferson House and its programs, long-term care is not guaranteed. It is suggested that residents and/or their families continually "next step plan" and register on the waitlists of 2-3 nursing facilities (to include Jefferson House) before the need for long term care becomes necessary.

Are residents allowed to smoke in their apartments?
No. Cedar Mountain Commons has a strict no smoking policy. Residents and their guests are not permitted to smoke anywhere in Cedar Mountain Commons or on its grounds.

For more pictures, visit our Virtual TourMay residents bring their cars to Cedar Mountain Commons when they move in?
Absolutely, so long as they maintain a current driver’s license. Most residents that bring their cars to Cedar Mountain Commons do retire them shortly after move-in since scheduled transportation is provided.

May the apartment finishes (wall color, carpet, etc.) be changed by a resident during their tenancy?
Yes, but written approval must be obtained from the Director before any modification and/or alteration can be made.  It is also the financial responsibility of the resident/the resident’s estate to bring the apartment back to its original condition when the apartment is vacated.

What happens if I experience a medical emergency in my apartment?
All apartments, regardless of their location within Cedar Mountain Commons, are equipped with an emergency call system that is monitored by the resident care staff 24 hours per day. By pressing the button on your emergency call box (that is mobile and "active" any place in your apartment), or by pulling the emergency cord in your bathroom, staff will respond to your request for help.

If I am a resident of the independent living neighborhood and my care needs change, must I relocate to the assisted living neighborhood to receive help from the resident care staff?
No. If you are a resident of the independent living neighborhood and your care needs change, you can "age in place" and remain in your apartment. We refer to this program as "AL in IL". Residents interested in participating in this program must go through the same medical/nursing assessment process that residents of the assisted living neighborhood do. Once in the "AL in IL" program, you will receive 3 meals per day as well as scheduled/intermittent services (to include medication management) arranged by the Resident Care Director and coordinated through the Resident Care Department. As a participant in the "AL in IL" program your independent living fees will be adjusted accordingly.
