Coping With Breast Cancer... A Network of Support
CHESS - Breast CancerA Network of Support

Facing breast cancer can be a frightening and difficult experience.

Dealing with this often-unexpected diagnosis is made easier with clear information, emotional support and assistance with challenging decisions. Your health care team will provide you with information about breast cancer. You may think of other questions when you are not with a health care professional or you may be afraid or embarrassed to ask certain questions. That is why CHESS was developed at the Center for Health Systems Research and Analysis at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and is available to you through the Helen & Harry Gray Cancer Center here at Hartford Hospital. CHESS provides you with a way to get good information about breast cancer in the comfort of your home, any time of the day or night - at no cost to you.

You do not need computer experience nor do you need to own your own computer to use CHESS. In some cases, we will provide you with a computer and Internet access and we will teach you how to use them. There are no charges for the computer, Internet access or training. Hartford Hospital is committed to providing you with as much useful information as possible in a user-friendly format.

Hundreds of women with breast cancer have used CHESS and shared the following...
  • "CHESS is one of the most positive, most supportive, most valuable parts of my day."
  • "I want to thank you for CHESS.  Without it, I don't think I could have made it through this time in my life."
  • "CHESS is a constant source of learning and opportunity to talk out feelings with other women who have had breast cancer.  CHESS has helped me through a very difficult time."
  • "When I am depressed, all I have to do is get on the computer!"

If you meet the following requirements, you can register for CHESS - Coping with Breast Cancer:
  • 18 years of age or older
  • English speaking
  • Patient of a Hartford Hospital physician
