Health Tip: When Kids Have Separation Anxiety

Last Updated: 2010-Jun-16  ::  (HealthDay)

(HealthDay News) -- Many children fear that something bad will happen to them when their parents aren't around. If the fear is intense enough, it may be diagnosed as separation anxiety disorder.

The Nemours Foundation offers this list of classic warning signs:

  • Having a panic attack or showing signs of panic (such as feeling nauseous or difficulty breathing) prior to a parent's departure.
  • Having nightmares about separating from a parent.
  • Being afraid of sleeping alone.
  • Worrying excessively about getting lost, being kidnapped or having to travel without a parent.
