Health Tip: Help Manage GERD

Last Updated: 2010-Jun-21  ::  (HealthDay)

(HealthDay News) -- Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) occurs when what's inside your stomach backs up into the esophagus. This may trigger an unpleasant taste in the mouth and a burning sensation in the chest or throat, commonly called heartburn.

The National Digestive Diseases Information Clearinghouse says these lifestyle changes may help prevent GERD symptoms:

  • Stop smoking.
  • Don't drink or eat anything that you know triggers your GERD symptoms.
  • Lose any excess weight.
  • Eat small meals several times a day.
  • Wear clothes that fit loosely.
  • Don't lie down for at least three hours after you eat.
  • Lift the head of your bed 6 inches to 8 inches higher than the foot of the bed.
