Health Tip: Controlling Baby's Eczema

Last Updated: 2011-Mar-01  ::  (HealthDay)

(HealthDay News) -- If baby's skin breaks out in an itchy, scaly rash on the face, elbows, or on the backs of the knees, it may be eczema, medically called atopic dermatitis.

The American Academy of Pediatrics suggests how to help keep baby's eczema under control:

  • Use an over-the-counter or prescription lotion or cream recommended by the child's pediatrician.
  • Bathe baby in a very mild, gentle soap.
  • Limit baths to no more than three times per week.
  • Use a mild laundry detergent.
  • Make sure baby's clothes are soft and won't irritate the skin. Avoid rough fabrics, such as wool.
  • Avoid any foods recommended by the pediatrician if the doctor suspects certain foods may be causing the eczema.
