Dialectical Behavioral Therapy Program

Program Philosophy
The Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) program at The Institute of Living is a treatment plan designed specifically for people with borderline personality disorder. DBT is a form of cognitive-behavior therapy, and it includes mindfulness, validation, and acceptance as strategies to help make change possible. The goal of treatment is to build a “life worth living”.

Program Structure
Intensive Outpatient DBT is a three-day per week program designed primarily for individuals in Stage One treatment. The program involves a minimum of three hours per day and focuses on safety, building connections in the community, and behavioral control. The program encompasses an eight-week cycle that includes:
  • Skills training
  • Behavioral analysis
  • Behavioral rehearsal
  • Target-oriented case management
  • Telephone consultation
  • Medication management
  • Weekly multi-family group meetings
Outpatient DBT is a once-a-week program that also lasts three hours but follows a 12-week cycle. This program is geared toward clients who have completed intensive treatment but need ongoing skill integration or toward clients who are referred by an outpatient provider and are seeking DBT as an adjunct to individual therapy.
