The Potential Early Psychosis Program is for young adults ages 17 to 25 who are experiencing a psychotic illness and have been ill less than five years.

This specialized program is designed to meet the unique needs of patients and families dealing with the early stages of a psychotic illness. Research has demonstrated that it is at the beginning of the illness that treatment is the most effective, so the Potential Early Psychosis Program aims to provide intensive services at that time. The program's focus is to return to functioning.

Program participants are encouraged to return to college or the workforce. The program has established contacts with many local colleges and universities and has worked with out-of-state colleges to facilitate a student's reentry when the illness is in the recovery phase.

Services Offered

The program includes individual and group psychotherapies, medication management, family education, cognitive remediation, and support services. These services are designed to offer whatever is needed in the early stages of a psychotic illness. Medication management from the psychiatrist starts out on a weekly basis, as does the individual treatment and group therapy. Intensive family education is also offered from the beginning of treatment and throughout the course of care. Monthly family meetings are convened for planning and support.

Staffing

The clinic is staffed by an experienced team of Psychiatrists, Psychologists, Social Workers, and Case Workers; and has access to the full resources of The Institute of Living, including inpatient care and psychopharmacological consultation.

Costs

The program participates with most commercial insurance programs.

However, this program is designed to offer more than a regular outpatient service. Due to the specialized nature of this program, a fee is charged to the family and is not covered by insurance. This fee is charged to the family in addition to co-pays and deductibles, and covers non-clinical support services.

Scholarship funds are available to help with the program fee.
