Hartford Hospital Board of Directors

Greg Deavens has been Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of the U.S. Insurance Group of MassMutual Life Insurance Company since 2006. Prior to joining MassMutual, he led financial planning and analysis, expense monitoring and control, and rating agency relations for New York Life, where he served as Senior Vice President in the Corporate Finance organization. His prior experience also includes leading the Investor Relations function at CIGNA Corporation and serving in roles of increasing responsibility with GE Capital Corporation, including Treasurer for GE Financial Assurance and working with the company’s acquisition activities. He began his career in public accounting with Price Waterhouse in 1984, specializing in financial services. While with Price Waterhouse, he served at the company’s London office for a year. He is a member of Hartford HealthCare’s Finance Committee and was elected a Hartford Hospital Corporator and a member of the Board of Governors, now the President’s Council, in 2008. He also is a member of the Executive Leadership Council, the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Financial Executives Institute and serves on the Boards of Trustees for Faith Congregational Church and the Amistad Center for Art and Culture. He graduated from Florida A&M University with a Bachelor of Science in accounting and is a CPA.

Douglas Elliot (Chair of the Board)
Douglas Elliot is President of Commercial Markets with The Hartford Financial Services Group. Before joining The Hartford in 2011, he served as President and Chief Operating Officer of HSB Group (Hartford Steam Boiler), a subsidiary of Munich Re. He also served as President of Specialty Insurance. Formerly, Mr. Elliot was a senior advisor with Aspen Insurance Holdings, a global reinsurer and specialty line insurer. Prior to joining Aspen Insurance Holdings, he held a number of positions of increasing responsibility at Travelers, which he joined in 1987. In 2002, he was named Chief Operating Officer for Travelers Property-Casualty and in 2004 assumed the position of CEO of General Commercial and Personal Lines for St. Paul Travelers Companies. He has been a member of the Hartford Hospital Board of Directors since 2002 and is now Chairman of the Board. He has been a Hartford Hospital Corporator since 2000. He also serves on the boards of the UConn Foundation and the American Insurance Association and is on the executive board and is past chairperson of the MetroHartford Alliance IFS Cluster and a past chairperson of the Central and Northeastern Connecticut United Way Campaign. He has a bachelor’s degree in accounting from the University of Connecticut and is a graduate of the Wharton School of Business insurance executive program.

Jeffrey A. Flaks (Ex-Officio)
Jeffrey A. Flaks is COO of Hartford HealthCare, a $2 billion health care system. Mr. Flaks formerly served as Hartford Hospital executive vice president and chief operating officer. He joined Hartford Hospital from MidState Medical Center, where he served as executive vice president and chief operating officer. His prior experience also includes serving as vice president for Support Services and Strategic Initiatives at Saint Vincent Catholic Medical Centers of New York. In addition, he held leadership roles at Continuum Health Partners in New York City and at the Detroit Medical Center in southeastern Michigan. Mr. Flaks is a member of the board of visitors of the University of Hartford’s College of Education, Nursing and Health Professions; a director of The Urban League of Greater Hartford; a board member of The Children’s Museum in West Hartford; a fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives; and the practitioner on the National Board of the American Association of University Programs in Health Administration (AUPHA). Mr. Flaks is a graduate of George Washington University with a master’s degree in health services administration. He earned a Bachelor of Science at Ithaca College.

Joseph C. Henry is Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer for XL Insurance, a $5 billion property and casualty insurance company with operations in 25 countries. Mr. Henry assumed his role in 2007 after serving as XL’s Chief Financial Officer of Asia and Europe for two years while based in London. He transferred to Hartford in mid-2007. Before joining XL Insurance, Mr. Henry served as Executive Vice President and Global Controller for XL Global Services Inc. and XL UK Services Ltd. from 2003 to 2005. He also served on an interim basis as Senior Vice President for XL Group in Bermuda in 2005. Mr. Henry has more than 36 years of technical, financial management and leadership experience in the financial services industry. He served as Chief Financial Officer and then Chief Operating Officer of Meadowbrook Insurance Group in Southfield, Mich. from 1993 to 2003 and also served as President of Meadowbrook’s Insurance Company operations. His experience also includes serving as Chief Financial Officer and Chief Administrative Officer for the Hanover Insurance Company in Worcester, Mass. from 1987 to 1993 and as an Audit Partner with KPMG in their New York, Bermuda and Boston offices from 1974 to 1987. Mr. Henry earned a Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting from Bernard M. Baruch College, City University of New York. He is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and a member of the American Institute of CPAs.

Gregory M. Jones is Managing Principal of Divestiture Partners, a Hartford-based corporate development and strategy advisory company focused on helping corporations, private equity firms, and government and non-profit entities execute unique divestitures and acquisitions. Mr. Jones assumed his current position in 2008. Prior to joining Divestiture Partners, Mr. Jones served as Division President of the Shock System/Industrial Group with United Technologies Corporation’s Pratt & Whitney Division from April to December 2008; President and General Manager of the Specialty Materials and Services Business Unit of Pratt & Whitney from 2004 to 2008; and Director of Strategy Development for Pratt & Whitney from 2000 to 2004. His earlier experience also includes serving as Vice President of Business Development for Bechtel in Chicago from 1997 to 2000, Vice President of Investment Banking for J.P. Morgan Securities Inc. from 1994 to 1997, and Vice President of Investment Banking for Lehman Brothers from 1987 to 1994. Mr. Jones has more than 20 years of experience in finance, strategy development, business capitalization and integration, planning and analysis, divestitures and acquisitions, and general management and has completed and participated in transactions in excess of $2 billion. He has served as a Hartford Hospital Corporator. He earned an MBA from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, a master’s degree in public management from Carnegie Mellon University and a Bachelor of Science from Morgan State University.

Roger Klene is President and CEO at Mott Corporation. He joined the Hartford Hospital Board of Directors in 1999 and has been a Corporator since 1996. He serves on a number of hospital committees, chairing the Quality and Credentialing Committee and is a member of the Development (former Chairman) and Planned Giving Committees. He also serves as Vice Chair of the Board of Regents for the University of Hartford and as a member of the Advisory Board of the Academy of Management Executives. Mr. Klene earned a bachelor’s degree in Forensic Science from Indiana University, a master’s degree in Industrial Psychology and Organizational Behavior from the University of New Haven, and a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Hartford.

Both on and off the court, Rebecca Lobo personifies success. As the 1995 Consensus National Player of the Year, Ms. Lobo led the University of Connecticut Women’s Basketball team to its first national championship. In 1996, she won a gold medal as the youngest member of the U.S. Women’s Olympic Basketball Team before embarking on a successful seven-year WNBA career. In 2001, Ms. Lobo and her mother, RuthAnn, founded “The RuthAnn and Rebecca Lobo Scholarship in Allied Health” at the University of Connecticut to encourage diversity in the health professions. Ms. Lobo retired from the WNBA in the fall of 2003, was inducted into the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame in 2010, and today works as a television analyst, author and motivational speaker. She has served on the University of Connecticut Board of Trustees since 2004 and joined Hartford Hospital’s Board of Directors in 2013. She is married to Sports Illustrated columnist Steve Rushin. The couple lives in Connecticut with their four children.

James M. Loree is Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Stanley Black & Decker. He joined Stanley Black & Decker (then Stanley Works) in 1999 as Vice President and Chief Financial Officer (CFO) after 19 years with General Electric Company. Mr. Loree was named Executive Vice President and CFO at Stanley in 2002 and Chief Operating Officer in 2009. As CFO, he had responsibility for investor relations; tax; treasury; accounting; audit; operational finance; supplier management; information technology; and business development activities, including strategic planning and mergers and acquisitions. Since 2002, Stanley has almost tripled in size with more than 50 acquisitions, including the landmark acquisition of Black & Decker in 2010. Stanley Black & Decker is a $10 billion Fortune 500 company which has outperformed the S&P 500 on a three-, five- and 10-year basis. Prior to joining Stanley, Mr. Loree’s career with GE spanned a multitude of assignments and industries, including leading financial and operational audits of GE’s global businesses, advising the company on global business strategy, and serving as CFO of one-third of GE Capital’s numerous operating businesses. Mr. Loree received a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from Union College, Schenectady, N.Y., where he graduated summa cum laude and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa.

David R. McHale is Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of the Hartford-based Northeast Utilities (NU) System, New England’s largest utility system serving more than 2 million electric and natural gas customers in Connecticut, western Massachusetts and New Hampshire. Mr. McHale assumed his current position in 2005. He is a member of NU’s Executive Committee, chair of the Enterprise Risk and Capital Committee, and chair of the Pension Committee. Mr. McHale joined the NU System in 1981 as a student intern in the Economic and Loan Forecasting organization. He became a full-time research analyst in Marketing and Consumer Economics in 1982 and joined the company’s Financial Planning group in 1986. In 1989, he joined the Treasury organization and was promoted to Manager of Investor Relations. In 1993, he was promoted to Manager of Project and Short-Term Finance and in May 1995 was named Assistant Treasurer. He was promoted to Vice President and Treasurer in 1998. Mr. McHale has a Bachelor of Science in economics from Southern Connecticut State University and an MBA in Finance from the University of New Haven. He is a graduate of Stanford University’s Executive Financial Management Program and Executive Program in Strategy and Organization.

Dr. Stacy Nerenstone is a member of the senior staff of Hartford Hospital’s Department of Medicine and a member of the consulting staff for the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. She is President of Oncology Associates P.C., a Corporator of Hartford Hospital, President of the Hartford Physician’s Hospital Organization and Vice President of the Hartford Hospital medical staff. She serves on the Hartford Hospital CEO Advisory Committee, the Hartford Hospital Cancer Center Executive Committee, and the Hartford HealthCare System Oncology Operations Committee and Strategy Council. She also is an assistant clinical professor at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine. Before joining Hartford Hospital in 2002, Dr. Nerenstone was a consulting physician at Windham Hospital, and prior to that, at Bethesda Naval Hospital. Her prior experience also includes serving as a senior investigator with the National Institutes of Health. Dr. Nerenstone is board certified in internal medicine and medical oncology. She is a magna cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Brown University, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature. She received her M.D. at the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University, where she received the Helen M. Sclarra Award in Neurology. Jeffry Nestler, MD (Ex-Officio)
Dr. Jeffry Nestler is a board-certified gastroenterologist and President of Connecticut GI, PC, (CTGI) a private practice consisting of more than 25 physicians and 9 mid-level providers with multiple clinical facilities throughout the state of Connecticut. He has served as the Managing Partner/Medical Director of the CT GI Endoscopy Center, LLC since 2000 and CEO/Medical Director of the Glastonbury Endoscopy Center, LLC since 2009. Dr. Nestler has been President of the Medical Staff at Hartford Hospital since 2009 and previously served as Vice President from 2007 to 2009. He currently serves as a Corporator at both Hartford and Day Kimball Hospitals. He has been a member of the Hartford Hospital Board of Directors since 2007. He has been the Director, Division of Gastroenterology at Hartford Hospital since 2002. Dr. Nestler also serves on a variety of professional committees, including the American College of Physician Executives and the Medicare Carrier Advisory Committee (Connecticut Chapter) and maintains membership with the Connecticut State Medical Society, Hartford County Medical Association, American College of Gastroenterology and the American Gastroenterology Association. Dr. Jarrod B. Post is a board-certified nephrologist and internal medicine practitioner with Connecticut Multispecialty Group, a wholly physician-owned and managed practice with more than 80 physicians and 25 mid-level providers in primary care and 14 specialty areas. Connecticut Multispecialty Group implemented a full electronic health record system in 2006 and has initiated a patent-pending portable personal electronic health record for improved patient medical history availability. Dr. Post, who is affiliated with Hartford Hospital, is an assistant clinical professor at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine. He has been featured as one of the "Top Doctors in Connecticut" in Connecticut Magazine, Hartford Magazine and Northeast Magazine (Nephrology, 2008). Dr. Post completed medical school at East Virginia Medical School in Norfolk. He completed his internship in internal medicine at Yale University and a fellowship in nephrology at the University of Pennsylvania. Lena Rodriguez is President and CEO of Community Renewal Team Inc. (CRT), one of the largest community action agencies in the United States. Ms. Rodriguez assumed her position with the Hartford-based agency in 2005. Prior to her current position, she served as Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of CRT from 1999 to 2005. From 1997 to 1999, she served as Director of Finance with the Division of Special Education for The New York City Board of Education. Her previous experience also includes serving as Principal Financial Analyst with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey from 1994 to 1999; Section Manager, Division of School Facilities, The New York City Board of Education from 1989 to 1994; and Assistant Director with the Division of Business and Administration and Assistant Accountant with the Division of School Facilities with The New York City Board of Education from 1987 to 1989. Ms. Rodriguez serves on the Capital Community College, Hartford Club and Central Connecticut State University boards and has served as a Hartford Hospital Corporator. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Bernard A. Baruch College in New York City and a master’s degree in Management from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Hartford.

Dr. Andrew Salner has been Director of Hartford Hospital’s Helen & Harry Gray Cancer Center since 1991. He also serves as the Medical Director of Radiation Oncology at Hartford Hospital and serves on numerous hospital, regional and national committees. He has been involved in Connecticut’s comprehensive cancer planning effort since 2001 and is Chair of the Board of Directors for the Connecticut Cancer Partnership, which is recognized by the Centers for Disease Control for its comprehensive cancer planning and implementation. Dr. Salner also is Chair of the Nuclear/Radiologic Response Task Force of the American Society of Radiology. He has been a member of the Hartford Hospital Board of Directors since 1996 and a Corporator since 1987. He is a former Chairman and member of the Hartford HealthCare Board of Directors. Dr. Salner received his bachelor’s degree and M.D. from Brown University and completed his residency in Internal Medicine at Hartford Hospital and a fellowship in Radiation Therapy at the Joint Center for Radiation Therapy at Harvard Medical School. Westley V. Thompson has been President of Sun Life Financial U.S. since 2008. Prior to this position, he served as President of Retirement Solutions at Lincoln Financial Group, which he joined in 1998 through the company’s acquisition of CIGNA Individual Insurance. In 2000, Mr. Thompson formed and built Lincoln Financial Distributors, the wholesaling distribution organization of Lincoln Financial Group. He was named president of the Employer Markets segment of Lincoln Financial Group in 2006. He began his career in 1979 at Aetna, where he held positions of increasing responsibility until joining CIGNA in 1994. He is a board member of LIMRA International, the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Hartford and the Wadsworth Antheneum-Amistad Foundation. He received his bachelor’s degree from Brown University.
