Anatomic and Clinical Pathology Residency
The Hartford Hospital four-year integrated Anatomic and Clinical Pathology residency program includes 27 months of formal education in anatomic pathology and 19.2 months of formal education in clinical pathology. The three remaining months of training may be either a continuation of structured AP/CP training or may be devoted to a specialized facet of pathology. Hartford Hospital AP/CP residency program is accredited by the ACGME for a total of 12 residency positions.

Our training emphasis is on competency based educational objectives and dependable educational outcome assessment. Each division has defined a set of general competencies, provides an appropriate educational experience and then assesses competency using a tailored divisional evaluation form.

The general philosophy is that residents and fellows should play an active role in department activities (service, administrative, and research) and should be given as much responsibility as they are able to assume, always with appropriate support. House staff completing the program should be competent to pursue either an academic or a private practice career in Pathology. The faculty for the program is drawn from administration and from the medical staff of Hartford Hospital as well as from the faculty of the University of Connecticut School of Medicine and the State Medical Examiner.

Practical clinical experience is balanced by a wide variety of conferences and didactic activities. Visiting faculty of national reputation are invited to the Department to present formal lectures and meet more casually with the trainees. A core curriculum of twice weekly conferences, extending over a two-year period, covers all of the basic elements of anatomic and clinical pathology . Numerous inter- and intradepartmental conferences provide breath and depth to the residents training. Residents must attend these conferences, and other key Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine conferences.

Resident Duty Hours
The resident duty hours and responsibilities vary greatly depending on the resident’s scheduled rotation -- but always within ACGME duty-hour guidelines stated under terms and conditions. The Chief Resident(s) schedules the on-call responsibilities. Residents are scheduled at-home (pager) call in one-week blocks, which coincides with those of the attending anatomic pathologists. Approximately 5-6 weeks of call are scheduled over the course of an academic year. PGY-1 residents cover the autopsy service on Saturdays for the first six months and, therefore, are only schedule 1-2 weeks of call. A separate Saturday on-call schedule for the second six months is generated from a pool of residents. After prior credentialing, the residents are expected to handle the types of problems that have been specifically delegated to them by the supervising staff member, who is always available for consultation.
