Thank you for your interest in the Hartford Hospital Pathology Residency Program.

Our ACGME-accredited program trains three residents per year and targets applicants that have career goals that coincide with our program’s strengths and goals. Hartford Hospital Pathology is a high-volume residency program whose strength lies in its ability to train strong, well-rounded diagnostic surgical pathologists. Our program is equally committed to providing residents with both knowledge and clinical experiences in all aspects of clinical pathology; graduates are equally prepared for their future roles in laboratory management. Our residents leave here as exceptional pathologists entering competitive fellowships and ultimately obtaining stimulating careers.

Pathology Residency Program Residents and Faculty

If you are unfamiliar with Hartford Hospital, we are one of the largest teaching hospitals in New England with a strong interest in training the next generation of physicians. With the state’s only helicopter ambulance, our 867 bed tertiary care hospital and regional referral center can draw patients from most of Connecticut and southwestern Massachusetts. Additionally on our campus we have the 97 bed Connecticut Children’s Medical Center. These 964 inpatient beds are supplemented by a great outpatient volume to provide you with exposure to all aspects of pathology during your training. You will also get wide exposure to all the clinical pathology disciplines, accomplished in part by the strong working relationship with Clinical Laboratory Partners, an independent, full-service reference laboratory.

As one of the Northeast’s highest volume surgical hospitals, we cover all the surgical subspecialties; we have one of the largest volumes of robotic surgeries in New England, we pioneered the hand assisted laparoscopic nephrectomy, and are one of the regions only “bloodless” surgical centers. Hartford Hospital is a level one trauma center with a state-of-the-art neurosurgery department and a transplant service performing heart, kidney and liver transplant surgeries. The Helen & Harry Gray Cancer Center is a nationally-recognized center for the treatment of patients with cancer, and one of the largest of its kind in the Northeast. These complex surgical and oncologic cases require interdisciplinary treatment planning, facilitated by pathology-rich interdepartmental case management conferences.

One of the most intriguing aspects of the program is that while the residency is administered by Hartford Hospital, it is staffed by Hartford Pathology Associates, a private practice group, and supported by Clinical Laboratory Partners, an independent, full-service clinical laboratory. Hartford Pathology Associates has a full complement of subspecialty trained pathologists; however, we practice, and therefore train, as “generalists” with the mind set that “everybody must be prepared to sign out any specimen.” The comprehensive test menu provided by Clinical Laboratory Partners is superior to any other laboratory in Connecticut including in-house cytogenetics and molecular pathology testing. While the majority of your time will be spent at Hartford Hospital, you also will rotate through the Clinical Laboratory Partners Newington campus and at the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Farmington, Connecticut. This mix of inpatient and outpatient cases, along with an exceptional blend of anatomic and clinical pathology will allow you the flexibility to enter either academics or a high-end private practice career after graduation.

There are ample opportunities for teaching and research during your time here. Hartford Hospital is a primary affiliated teaching hospital of the University of Connecticut School of Medicine. In addition to teaching the junior pathology residents while on service, we have rotating medical students and clinical residents on month-long clerkships in the department. Research is actively supported with mentoring, statistical assistance, study design development, and financial support for attending national meetings to present accepted abstracts.
