Residency with Emphasis in Primary Care
Program Description
The Pharmacy Residency Program with an emphasis in a Community Oriented Primary Care Practice is co-sponsored by the University of Connecticut School of Pharmacy & Hartford Hospital. This is a one-year program to develop general skills in institutional pharmacy practice (6 months) with a special focus in primary care pharmacotherapy (6 months) while providing opportunities for didactic and clinical teaching and research.

Elective Experiences can be selected from the following categories depending upon availability:

  •       Cardiology
  •       Family Medicine
  •       Outpatient HIV/AIDS Clinic
                
Primary Care Focus
The primary training site will be at the Adult Primary Care Center of Hartford Hospital. The resident will be expected to develop a strong knowledge base in common ambulatory care disease conditions that include but are not limited to the following: hypertension, diabetes mellitus, hyperlipidemia, asthma, smoking cessation, CAD, congestive heart failure, infectious disease, hormone replacement therapy, rheumatoid and osteoarthritis.
 
The resident will participate in daily patient-care activities that may include patient counseling, interview, and history taking, and limited physical assessment skills. The resident will assess current drug therapy, and design an individualized therapeutic plan with appropriate follow-up to evaluate outcomes. The resident will be expected to provide extensive patient education in various disease states and their management in pharmacist-managed specialty clinics. The resident will be expected to complete a major research project to be presented at an annual resident conference.
