About the Center for Education, Simulation & Innvation

Mission
To offer comprehensive services in an environment where innovation and teaching are integral to care; where we are proud to serve patients and one another; where meeting the challenge of complex medical needs is viewed as a defining competency; and where quality and safety of care are a constant. To assist all healthcare providers in enhancing multidisciplinary team performance, the quality of patient care, and patient safety through a comprehensive range of educational programs using state-of-the-art simulation and cutting edge technologies.

Vision
We will be a premier global center for comprehensive experiential learning and innovation using simulation and other leading-edge training technologies.

The Center for Education, Simulation and Innovation at Hartford Hospital (CESI) at Hartford Hospital is an ideal setting to begin to establish a culture of patient safety and open communication among the interdisciplinary team. Its mission is to promote excellence in clinical care, advance patient safety and improve multidisciplinary team performance through high-fidelity medical simulation. Participants are able to train in a setting similar to his/her actual work environment to create an atmosphere of realism. Working in this environment lends support to the simulator’s extended capabilities to mimic multiple types of acute crises and patient care scenarios.

The first manikin was purchased through the Department of Anesthesia by Dr. Thomas Mort, who had the foresight to see the direct benefits to patient safety and health care provider education human patient simulation could offer. Dr. Mort was the champion in establishing the first Simulation Center in the State of Connecticut back in 1999. Since then the Simulation Center has been renamed and expanded its new state-of-the-art regional training facility. CESI has expanded from 900 square feet on South Building 5 to 10,000 square feet in the ERC second floor. The new facility is comprised of three separate areas:

  • Robotic and endovascular simulators
  • Task trainers, ultrasound technology and Fundamentals of Laparoscopic Surgery (FLS)
  • 2 AV equipped lecture and debriefing rooms
  • A 75 seat AV equipped amphitheater
  • Five simulated clinical environments each with its own control room.
    • Labor & Delivery
    • Resuscitation
    • ICU
    • Trauma/ED
    • Operating Room

In April 2014 CESI launched a new mobile simulation initiative. The mobile team travels to our customers that are unable to transport their learners to our central facility. This also allows learners to experience training in their own practicing environment, using their own equipment.

We accommodate most clinical areas and have seen our programs grow exponentially. Nursing as well as the departments of Anesthesia, Critical Care, Emergency Medicine, Ob-Gyn, Surgery and more are all using the facility to orient their medical students, residents, fellows to their clinical practices. Their learners are able to experience hands on training without the added pressure of performing tasks on real people. It builds their confidence and allows them to learn, practice and repeat procedures in a safe, controlled and structured environment. The US Military, Law Enforcement and EMS also use our facility for their training purposes.

CESI has been nationally recognized as a Center of Excellence by the Laerdal Corporation (the simulators’ vendor). Currently, CESI is one of only 20 centers recognized nationally. This major achievement did not come with any financial compensation from Laerdal, but has established CESI as a role model for others.
