The delicate mechanisms of the inner ear govern not only our hearing, but our sense of balance. DIzziness accounts for an estimated 5 to 6 percent of physician visits and affects about 40 percent of those over 40 at some time. Vertigo -- a form of dizziness marked by a sense that the patient or the surrounding are spinning -- can be caused by inner ear disorders. The good news is that there are treatments, from physical therapy to surgery -- that can provide relief from these debilitating disorders.
The Hearing & Balance Center at Hartford Hospital is directed by neurotologist, Dr. Marc Eisen, with all of the resources of Hartford Hospital and Connecticut Ear, Nose & Throat Associates. This includes expert audiology, balance-testing, physical therapy (provided by Eastern Rehabilitation Network) and access to other medical specialties, such as neurology, if necessary.
