Who has library privileges?
  • All Hartford Hospital, Connecticut Children’s Medical Center, Midstate Medical Center and affiliated staff
  • Affiliated house staff and students rotating through Hartford Hospital as part of their clinical experience, as well as students from the Hartford Hospital Allied Health programs
  • Authorized customers must complete a registration form in order to initiate borrowing privileges
  • Unaffiliated medical and health professionals, as well as patients and their families can use materials and resources in the libraries, but do not have borrowing privileges

Do I need to register to use the library?
  • Yes, registration is required to:
    • check out items from any of the collections
    • receive an Ovid password
    • request an interlibrary loan
    • borrow a laptop

How can I access library resources from home?
  • Go to the HH portal: https://portal.harthosp.org.
    • enter your Novell login and password
    • go to the HH Intranet and choose Health Science Libraries
  • Passwords are not required for any databases (other than Ovid) when accessing the library resources through the hospital portal
  • UptoDate is not accessible remotely through the portal

How can I contact a librarian to ask a question?
  • Click the Ask a Librarian link on the library Internet website
  • Call the Robinson Health Science Library main desk at (860) 545-2971
  • Visit one of the library locations

How can I find articles full text?
  • From the Libraries’ Internet or Intranet pages, choose A-to-Z Journal Holdings
    • Journals available full text online through one of our databases will have a computer icon and a link to that journal
    • Journals available from our print holdings will have a book icon along with a link to HartCat, our online library catalog
      • In HartCat please note that print journals may be shelved at different campus locations according to the year of publication

How can I have a literature search done for me? 
  • Hartford Hospital, CCMC, MMC and affiliated staff may request a literature search be performed by library staff
  • Those eligible should complete an Literature Search Request Form available online or in the library
    • Be sure to include either a phone number or email address
    • You will be notified when your search is ready
  • STAT searches are available ONLY when information is needed for immediate patient care and must be called in
  • Employees who are also students, in any program, may request three (3) searches per semester for school needs

How can I get help doing a search I want to work on myself? 
  • Call the library at (860) 545-2971 to set up a time for one-on-one instruction, or to arrange for a small group class

How can I find which Journals are on the shelves at Hartford Hospital?
  • Search for print journal titles in HartCat, our online catalog
  • Find the campus location of any journal in HartCat
  • Use Journals A-to-Z to link to online journals

Where are the different libraries on campus and how are they different? 
  • The Robinson Health Science Library, located in 3rd floor of the Education & Resource Center contains:
    • Medical, Dental, and Pharmacy journals and books
    • Consumer and Integrative Medicine collection
    • Nursing and allied health collections
    • Geriatric/gerontology collection
    • Performance Development Center (PDC) collection (a collection of books, video’s and A.V. materials supporting management and leadership)
    • The Pyrtek Learning Resource Center is also located here
  • The Institute Of Living Library, located on the 3rd floor of the Research/Burlingame Building at the Institute of Living contains:
    • Psychiatric and mental health journals
    • Archives of some older titles from our medical and nursing collections

How can I get an article from a journal we do not have on the shelf?
  • Use Journals A-to-Z:
    • Journals with full text availability will have live blue links
  • Articles found in journals not available online or on the shelf:
    • Complete an Article Request Form here or at the library information desk
      • The library will request it for you from another library
      • Only 3 articles per person / per day will be processed
      • This process takes approximately 7-10 business days
      • Please plan for this delivery time when you begin your research

How can I get help with a presentation?
  • The Pyrtek Learning Resource Center is designed to assist hospital staff with a variety of presentations and technical needs.
    • Call Dan Small, Multimedia Assistant: (860) 545-5074
    • It is best to arrange an appointment for specific and detailed projects with either person. However, they are available to answer your questions daily.

How can I return or renew books?
  • Renew a book by calling the main desk at (860) 545-2971
  • Books may be kept for a 3-week period and renewed once
  • Book drop boxes are located outside of each library for your convenience when the library is closed

What happens when a book is over due?
  • We will send you an overdue notice for items not returned by the due date
  • We will issue a bill for overdue items that include replacement and processing charges
  • Contact the library at (860) 545-2971 for a lost item and to arrange payment

Can I put books on hold if they are not on the shelf?

  • You can place an item on HOLD by calling or coming in to the library
  • We will call you when the item is available

Does the library have access to books online?
  • Go to Find a Book and click on eBooks
  • You will find links to books in medicine, nursing, pharmacy, allied health, research,  and more

What photocopy services does the library have?
  • Hartford Hospital, CCMC & MMC employees and House staff are eligible to make work or study related photocopy requests
  • Complete a Journal Request form available here and at any library Information Desk
  • A maximum of 3 requests per day will be copied
  • Requests are copied within 2 business days
  • Self-service photocopy machines are available at all libraries for a fee
  • Staff and affiliated patrons pay 5 cents per page, unaffiliated patrons pay 15 cents per page
  • For more information about using the copy machines, ask at the Information Desk
  • Please note: House staff are expected to make their own copies

Can I borrow journals?
  • Journals do not “circulate” which means that they can not be removed form the library
  • You can photocopy, within copyright law, articles from our journals

Can I borrow a laptop?
  • You can borrow a laptop for use in the Robinson Health Science Library if you are a registered library user
  • Come to the library main desk to complete the necessary paperwork

Can I have journals pulled from the shelf?
  • Library customers must pull their own journals

Can I print from the library computer?

  • Enduser computer stations have printer access
  • Printing fees are 5 cents per page for HH, CCMC & MMC employees, students, patients and family members; 15 cents per page for all others
  • The Pyrtek Learning Resource Center has a color printer ... copies are $1.00 each

Is it okay to bring food in to the library?
  • We do allow food and drinks in the library for your convenience
  • We expect customers to be careful with these items near computer terminals and print material

How can I copy or save files to be used later?
  • You may not save files to enduser stations in the library
  • Library computers clear all work at the end of each day when they are shut down
  • Flash/removable drives are suggested: (note: we do not sell flash drives) 
  • In the Pyrtek Learning Resource Center, files may be saved to the local “friend” drive

Is there a place to have a study group or meeting at the library?
  • Inquire at the front desk of the Robinson Health Science Library for availability at (860) 545-2971 
  • Reservations may be made up to one day in advance
  • Standing reservations are not possible
