About the Department

 

DIVISIONS: Child/Adolescent Psychiatry General/Adult Psychiatry Geriatric Psychiatry Psychology

Founded in 1822, The Institute of Living was one of the first mental health centers in the country, and the first hospital of any kind in Connecticut.

Today, as part of Hartford Hospital, it is one of America's leading not-for-profit mental health centers for comprehensive patient care, research, and education in the fields of behavioral, psychiatric, and addiction disorders. The department consists of the following sections: General Psychiatry, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Geriatric Psychiatry and Psychology.

 

Its comprehensive services include outpatient, partial hospital, residential (supervised living), inpatient, crisis intervention, and consultation, as well as the three Grace S. Webb Schools for elementary, middle, and high school students. Specialty programs include the Addiction Recovery Service, Adult Programs, the Child and Adolescent Program, the Eating Disorders Program, the Geriatric Program, the Program for Professionals, the Assessment Center, the Schizophrenia Rehabilitation Program, the Memory Disorders Program and trauma services. In addition, the four research centers of the Institute of Living (the Olin Neuropsychiatry Research Center, the Anxiety Disorders Center, the Burlingame Center for Psychiatric Education and Research, and the Braceland Center for Mental Health and Aging), generate state-of-the-art research across a broad range of subjects.

 

Located on 35 acres originally landscaped by Frederick Law Olmstead, The Institute of Living lies near the center of Hartford, Connecticut.
