About the Department

The Department of Surgery's aggregate surgical workload accounts for nearly half the total number of operative procedures performed in the institution.

 

The spectrum of services is distributed in the department’s various divisions: Cardiac Surgery, Surgical Critical Care, General Surgery (including surgical oncology, colorectal surgery, endocrine surgery and laparo-endoscopic surgery), Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Podiatry, Transplantation Surgery, Vascular and Thoracic Surgery and Pediatric Surgery (provided at Connecticut Children’s Medical Center (CCMC) adjacent to Hartford Hospital.)

 

The delivery of the highest attainable quality of surgical care is the primary mission of the department. The ongoing monitoring of that care and the efforts to continuously improve it are carried out in collaboration with a strong surgical nursing department, with other expert caregivers, and with medical information systems of the institution in support of patient care. In response to patient need Center for Bloodless Medicine and Surgery (CBMS) has been established to accommodate those individuals who, guided by religious constraints, will not permit blood or blood products as elements of their treatment.

 

The education of medical students has been a priority of the department for 25 years. In 1996, the training of surgery residents as future general and subspecialty surgical practitioners reached its 50-year anniversary as an integral part of the department’s mission. Education of residents and staff is further enhanced by the Center for Advanced Technology (CAT) and the Simulation Center to assimilate new techniques into the armamentarium of all surgical disciplines in the institution. The blended synergy of patient focus and education is the hallmark of the department.
