Reaching Out to Those Most at Risk
Bill and Nancy Trachsel have given $1 million to support our cancer program – specifically to help provide outreach to the community – including underserved populations – with education about prevention and early detection and free screening services for breast, cervical, prostate, and colorectal cancer. The Trachsels have long been generous to Hartford Hospital. Bill, retired from United Technologies Corp. as the Senior Vice President and General Counsel, has been on the Hartford Hospital Board of Directors since 1993. Nancy was a member of the Board of Directors of the Hartford Hospital Auxiliary. Their generosity will help us better serve the communities that depend on us.

Final preparations are underway for the April 27th go-live of SCM Clinical Documentation (KBC – Knowledge Based Charting Module). This module incorporates care planning, assessments, patient education and goals/outcomes for the following clinical disciplines: Nursing, Respiratory, Nutrition, Rehab Services, Social Work, Case Coordination, Palliative Care, Integrative Medicine, Pastoral Services.
Providers will have access to view the electronic documents and discrete elements of the patient record in several locations within SCM. Several hospitalists, mid-level practitioners and attending physicians are working with the project team to design electronic views of the patient record to support workflow and decision-making.
Community Benefit Report 2008-2009
In fiscal years 2008 and 2009, Hartford Hospital provided approximately $256,268,409 in community benefit to the people of our area. However, the number tells only part of the story. "Advancing Medicine: Robotic Surgery"
The second in our "Advancing Medicine" prime-time TV series ran at 7:30 p.m, Thursday, March 5 on WFSB, Channel 3.It was a look at the impact of robotic surgery on patients and families. It will be rebroadcast at 1 p.m., Saturday, April 10. You can also view it here, on the WFSB website.
New Suburban Locations
On Wednesday, Hartford Hospital and The Hand Center officially opened a new, collaborative venture, The Glastonbury Surgery Center, 195 Eastern Blvd., Glastonbury. The Hand Center is a joint venture with Drs. H. Kirk Watson, Duffield Ashmead and Daniel Mastella, offering orthopedic, sports medicine and podiatric outpatient procedures. Wednesday’s ribbon cutting came only one month after the opening of a new Hartford Medical Group facility at 1025 Silas Deane Highway in Wethersfield. The HMG office replaced the previous location at 1260 Silas Deane Highway, Wethersfield.
Board of Directors Recognize Staff Members for Their Work in Haiti
On March 2 the Board of Directors Members formally recognized members of the active medical staff and nursing staff who traveled to Haiti to provide care at a time of extraordinary crisis, chaos and loss.
New Medical Staff Award Winners Announced
Three new physician awards will be given at this year’s Medical Staff Spring Event, which will be 6 p.m., Wednesday, May 5 in Heublein Hall at the ERC. The new awards join the Distinguished Service Award, which has been given since 1975. The winners of this year’s awards are: Distinguished Service Award: Drs. David F. Mintell and J. John Straub; John K. Springer Humanitarian Award, Dr. Lenworth M. Jacobs; Physician Philanthropy Awards, Dr. Henry Low; and Young Practitioner Award, Dr. Amy Brown.

GCRC Seminar: Dr. Paul Thompson Presents "Studies on Statin Side Effects"
This seminar will describe the causes of statin myopathy, identify barriers to conducting statin myopathy in clinical and translational research and discuss strategies to overcoming these barriers. The CME eligible presentation will be given March 9, 12:00-1:00 PM at the Low Learning Center, UCHC. (This will also be webcast at the Gilman Auditorium, but CMEs are not available for the webcast).
