Hartford Hospital Laboratory Director is National Expert
Dr. Joseph DiGiuseppe, director of the Special Hematology Laboratory, is a co-author of “Guidelines for the Diagnosis and Monitoring of Paroxysmal Nocturnal Hemoglobinuria and Related Disorders by Flow Cytometry,” which was published recently in the journal Cytometry Part B (Clinical Cytometry). These guidelines, which represent the consensus of an international group led by Dr. Michael Borowitz of the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions, focus on diagnostic strategies and techniques suitable for routine and high-sensitivity analyses of the abnormal red and white blood cells characteristic of paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH). The current assay for PNH offered by the Special Hematology Laboratory conforms to these new guidelines. Dr. DiGiuseppe is the current vice-president and president-elect of the International Clinical Cytometry Society.
Town Hall Meetings a Success - Q & As Available Online

The meetings, public forums hosted by Jeff Flaks, EVP and COO and other members of the leadership team, were conducted over the last several weeks. Additional meeting will be scheduled at the West Hartford Surgery Center at Blue Back Square and at the Newington Campus. In a recent letter to hospital staff members, Flaks and Elliot Joseph, President and CEO of Hartford HealthCare and Hartford Hospital, thanked employees for their candor, enthusiasm and ideas.
MEC Election and Medical Staff Annual Meeting
The election for the three at-large seats on the Medical Executive Committee is open until 5 p.m. on Wed., Nov. 17. The results will be announced at the Medical Staff Annual Meeting at 7 a.m., Thursday, Nov. 18, in Gilman Auditorium in the Conklin Building.
IOL Physician Wins AACAP Leadership Award
Dr. Adrienne Bentman, director of the Adult Psychiatry Residency Program at the Institute of Living, is this year's winner of the Robert Cancro Leadership Award. This award is given annually, through the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, to recognize a currently-serving General Psychiatry training director, medical school dean, CEO of a training institution, chair of Department of Pediatrics or chair of a Department of Psychiatry for contributions to the promotion of child/adolescent psychiatry.
Retired, Honorary Staff get Update on Advances in Cancer Treatment
Dr. David Eisenberg addressed more than 60 honorary and retired medical staff physicians of Hartford Hospital and their spouses on innovative surgical techniques that are enhancing multidisciplinary care for cancer patients. Eisenberg is a member of Hartford Surgical Oncology Specialists. The annual luncheon, conducted this year on Oct. 27, is sponsored by the Planned Giving Committee and provides an opportunity for honorary and retired medical staff members to stay abreast of medical advances at Hartford Hospital and remain engaged with the Hospital’s leadership and current medical staff. In addition to Dr. Eisenberg’s presentation, Elliot Joseph, President and CEO of Hartford HealthCare and Hartford Hospital, provided a year-in-review update of the Hospital and the healthcare industry. Dr. Jeffrey Nestler, president of the medical staff, followed with news of the hospital’s physicians.
Register for Required N-95 Mask Fit Testing on HealthStream
Registration for mandatory N-95 mask fit testing of staff and physicians must now be completed on HealthStream. The Fit Test scheduler located on the Hartford Hospital intranet homepage has been removed. Staff member who already are registered for December sessions will be transferred to HealthStream and need do nothing. However, if individuals want to change sessions, this must be done on HealthStream. This program is mandated by OSHA for any staff member who comes in contact with patients on airborne precautions. Fit testing will take place the week of Dec. 6 – Dec. 11. Individuals can see if they require fit testing by logging into HealthStream from the hospital intranet. Those who must be fit tested will see a course: “Mandatory Respirator Fit Testing Required by OSHA.” If the course does not appear, fit testing is not required. To schedule a fit-testing session, register for the “course.”

Welcome Our New Physicians: Brian Shames, MD
Dr. Brian Shames is a general surgeon trained as an expert in transplantation sciences and transplant surgery. A Connecticut native and UConn Medical School grad, his fellowship was at the University of Wisconsin. While in Milwaukee, he established a successful pediatric liver and kidney transplant program. He joins the Hartford Hospital adult transplant program and will further develop the Connecticut Children’s Medical Center pediatric transplant program. (The CCMC pediatric transplant program is part of the HH adult program.) He also will be performing general surgeries and procedures related to dialysis access. In addition, he will be an educator at UConn Medical School and teach residents, medical students and fellows while they rotate at Hartford Hospital.
