The Interventional Electrophysiology lab at Hartford Hospital
The Interventional Electrophysiology lab at Hartford Hospital is comprised of a state-of–the-art Bi-plane Radiolographic Technology and Monitoring Equipment.
 
This lab opened in July of 2003. It is the first lab in the Hartford area to do atrial fibrillation radiofrequency ablations as well as laser lead extractions.
 
Other procedures include atrial flutter, SVT and ventricular tachycardia ablations, as well as Implantable Cardioversion Devices, Bi-Ventricular Resynchronization Devices and Pacemaker Implants.
 
The Interventional Electrophysiology laboratory is a department of The Heart Rhythm Services of Hartford Hospital Cardiology Division.

The director of Heart Rhythm Management is Jeffrey Kluger M.D. The Laboratory director is Christopher Clyne, M.D. Attending Interventional Electrophysiologists include Magdy Migeed, M.D. and Ravi Yarlagadda, M.D.
 
The staff has a variety of degrees and backgrounds.
 
The Registered Nurse’s responsibilities are clinical management of acute cardiac & medical/surgical patients with complex Cardiac Arrhythmias within the OR setting of the Interventional Electrophysiology Laboratory.
 
Our RN’s develop proficiencies with the Bi-plane Radiological Equipment, Laser Lead Extraction Equipment, Electrophysiology Monitoring and Data base Equipment as well as 3D Cardiac Mapping Equipment.
 
Our nursing staff also provide conscious sedation during diagnostic electrophysiology procedures and clinical support for:
  • Cardioversions
  • Tilt table studies
  • Basic pacemaker
  • ICD interrogation

Within the division of Heart Rhythm Management Services there are 6 nurses, one CV technologist with RCIS, several Arrhythmia service technicians and three APRN’s.
 
Shifts in the lab are primarily four ten hour days, depending on patient needs. The nursing positions support the Heart Rhythm Management Services with at present, no weekends, no holidays and no on-call schedule.

Hartford Hospital is a teaching institution. The Interventional Electrophysiology Laboratory is involved in research.
 
Current projects are with device manufacturers as well as Hartford Hospital sponsored research studies including animal research.
 
A variety of educational opportunities are available to the staff. These are in the form of in-services and presentations from vendors on current and new therapies. Staff members also attend national conferences and the annual Heart Rhythm Management Symposium and the annual Cardiovascular Symposium held at Hartford Hospital.
 
The patient volume continues to grow for the Hartford Hospital Heart Rhythm Management Services along with the number of procedures which are now available to patients and their families.
 
The experienced staff of the Hartford Hospital Interventional Electrophysiology Laboratory has met this growing challenge through innovative, flexible staffing and management, continuing education, research, and a dedication to provide the best possible care to Hartford and the surrounding communities.
