Accredited as a “Center of Excellence” providing excellence in quality, safety, and long-term outcomes.
The Surgical Weight Loss Center at Hartford Hospital is accredited by the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP). This is a joint program with the American College of Surgeons (ACS) and the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS), which is designed to achieve national standards in patient safety and quality outcomes for bariatric surgery centers.MBSAQIP Accreditation

The Center of Excellence accreditation is bestowed upon a program following a rigorous evaluation process that documents excellence in safe surgical care and quality outcomes, with a focus on long-term results. The MBSAQIP award comes from the largest organization of bariatric surgeons in the world. Bariatric surgery accreditation not only promotes uniform standard benchmarks, but also supports continuous quality improvement.

Obesity is the leading nutritional disorder in our nation. In fact, it is one of the major causes of suffering, disability, and death. Dietary modification in persons who are greatly overweight can be succinctly summarized: they rarely work.

Surgery for morbid obesity is about one and only one thing: improving your overall quality of life. We consider weight loss of more than 30% of preoperative weight a good result. However, there is a great deal of variation with some losing more and some losing less. As with all forms of treatment for obesity, your results will depend greatly on your motivation and long-term compliance.

Darren S. Tishler, MD, and Dr. Pavlos K. Papasavas, MD, Board-Certified and fellowship trained laparoscopic surgeons, lead our Bariatric Surgery Program, where we offer technologically advanced, compassionate, and safe surgical treatment for morbid obesity.
