Centering Pregnancy
Department:   Parent Education Program, Women's Health Services
Description:

A new concept in prenatal care has arrived at the Hartford Hospital Women's Ambulatory Health Services. It's called Centering Pregnancy and it brings expecting moms together for their pregnancy journeys.

At each appointment, you will spend time with your midwife or doctor and other pregnant women, so you can learn more about pregnancy, childbirth and parenting.

How does it work?
You will join a group with other women whose due dates are close to yours. In each of your ten appointments, you will have private time with your midwife or doctor to check your baby.

Then, you'll gather together as a group so you can talk and ask any questions about your health, the baby, your pregnancy, and what you're going through, both physically and emotionally. You'll also have a chance to talk about how to care for your baby. Groups are a great way to learn from each other and get community support.

If you'd like to bring a partner, friend or family member to your group appointments, they are welcome to join.

When do groups meet?
Your first prenatal appointment with your midwife or doctor will be a private appointment. Then, when you are between 14-18 weeks pregnant, you will join a group. Your group will have appointments once a month early in your pregnancy. As you get closer to your due date, your appointment will be every 2 weeks.

Where are appointments held?
Groups will meet at the Women's Ambulatory Health Services facility, located at 111 Park Street in Hartford.

Why group care?
Group care is becoming a more popular choice for prenatal care because:
• You spend quality, one-on-one time with your midwife or doctor
• You can meet other women; it's a great opportunity to make new friends and learn from each other
• All of your care and education will take place during your group appointments, so you won't need to make separate appointments for lab tests or childbirth classes
• You'll enjoy refreshments at each appointment
