Are You At Risk for Skin Cancer
Department:   Cancer Center
Description:

May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month, a time to increase awareness of the importance of the prevention, early detection, and treatment of skin cancer.

According to the American Cancer Society, skin cancer is the most common of all cancers. It accounts for nearly half of all cancers in the United States. More than 3.5 million cases of basal and squamous cell skin cancer are diagnosed in this country each year. Melanoma, the most serious type of skin cancer, will account for more than 76,600 cases of skin cancer in 2013.

The best ways to lower the risk of skin cancer are to avoid long exposure to intense sunlight and practice sun safety.

You may consider screening if:

  • You have a family history of melanoma (one relative is enough)
  • You have a history of more than three sunburns in past
  • You are age 50 and over
  • You are not currently being screened by a dermatologist
